NEW HAVEN - The city closed the books on 2014 by equaling its lowest homicide count in the last decade, a trend that mirrors falling state and national violent crime numbers. The were 13 homicides overall in New Haven in 2014, a drop from the previous year’s count of 20. Further, one of the homicides in 2014 was found to be in self-defense during an attempted robbery. BRIDGEPORT - Bridgeport, often considered the most-dangerous city in Connecticut, may no longer deserve that title. Homicides in Bridgeport are down 33.3 percent (from six to four), shootings are down 12 percent and the number of shooting victims fell 18 percent, according to figures released in July by the city's deputy police chief. HARTFORD - Deirdre M. Daily, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that a federal grand jury in Hartford has returned indictments against four Hartford residents allegedly involved in drug trafficking and associated criminal activity in the Garden Street area of Hartford known as the “Chicken Coop.” The indictments were returned on July 16, 2014. KEITH SHEPARD, also known as “Pretty,” 23, is charged with four counts of distributing crack cocaine and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. BRIDGEPORT - Channeling Shakespeare and clearly enjoying a back-and-forth with a crowd of about 40 teenagers, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy visited the Burroughs Community Center Tuesday to celebrate the city's falling rates of violent crime. Bridgeport's chapter of Project Longevity, city officials said, has reached out to 79 potential offenders between the ages of 17 and 34 — some of them with records of violent crimes — inviting them to group meetings with police officers and other members of the community to talk about the consequences of violent activity and offering to help them find jobs.
